Information

For Gateship-One.net, Ben Cotton, who plays Dr. Kavanagh (and you know

this hateful and hated character) has agreed to answer our questions.

Interview:

Q: In Stargate Atlantis, you play the role of Dr. Kavanagh. What do

you think of this character?

A: I think that Kavanagh is a funny guy to play. In my opinion, he' s

a bit of a loner and a little misunderstood. He has good intentions,

but he's a little weak. He clearly likes to play it safe and doesn't

want to take risks which would put himself in danger.

Q: How did you find yourself on the set of the series? Did you try out

for this role or were you chosen?

A: I passed an audition for the role of Kavanagh. That was only for

one episode, but the writers and producers decided to have me return,

which was brilliant.

Q: What is your best memory of working on Stargate Atlantis?

What was it like to debate with Dr. Weir (Tori Higginson) in "38 minutes"?

A: In "38 Minutes" I worked with Fiona Hogan, which was great because

she is a good friend. She's an incredible actress and I always wanted

to work with her, so that was brilliant. Working with Mario (the

director) was also very cool - because he is good and it was easy to

work with him. Loud and disciplined, but lots of fun. The

disagreement with Weir was brilliant. I hope that they do that again.

She was very cruel to me, however. (Weir, not Torri…Torri is

adorable.)

Q: How do you react to the fact that many fans don't like your

character because of what he said in "Letters From Pegasus"

(questioning the command of Dr Weir.)?

A: I am happy that the fans hate Kavanagh, there is what…He is

underhanded. I think he wants to be in charge and he is jealous of

Weir. Maybe his ego is bruised because Elizabeth's hair is prettier

than his.

Q: Is there a return planned for Dr. Kavanagh in Season 2? If yes, in

which episodes and in what circumstances?

A: Well, it's hard to say. I hope to return, but no one can be sure.

I had lunch on the set the other day with Torri (note for GateOne.net:

Higginson plays Dr. Weir) who thought they might want to have more

scenes between us.

Q: How would you have reacted to the events encountered in Season 1 if

you had been in the skin of your character, Dr. Kavanagh?

A: I like to think that I am much easier to live with than Kavanagh.

I am more diplomatic. I am in agreement with all the fans who say

that was not really the time to talk about Weir about personal

feelings. When lives are in danger, whining is not the best attitude

to adopt. I think that if I have the chance to go into space to fight

the Wraith, I will accept the fact that there is danger, and that it

is necessary to move your ass in spite of your fears.

Q: Do you have any idea what Dr. Kavanagh took to Atlantis? And you,

what would you have taken?

A: I think that Kavanagh surely has one of those little cases for

vitamins with the day of the week on them and a photo of his mother.

Perhaps a teddy bear that he hides under his pillow. I would have taken a guitar and an iPod. Maybe a VTT in case I have the time on another planet.

Q: What is your favorite episode of Stargate Atlantis? Why?

Do you like Science Fiction in General?Do you believe that life exists elsewhere in space?

A: Unfortunately, I haven't seen any episodes of Atlantis. I do not

think it is being broadcast in Canada at the moment. I must admit that

I wasn't a big fan of science fiction before working on the series.

Now I love it. I just needed to be exposed to it a little more. There must be others elsewhere in space. I find it hard to believe that we humans are the only ones. I have also seen two or three things in the sky that I cannot explain with any certainty, so I have to say that yes, I believe in extraterrestrials.

Q: Do you have any other professional projects?

A: For the moment, I was very lucky. This year has been very busy, I

worked on 6 feature films and 4 or 5 different shows in the last 12

months! Check out IMDB for the details.

Thanks to Ben Cotton for the interview!

Ben: "I stayed at a friends house that night, miraculously, by some weird chance. So I wasn’t here. It started about three in the morning. Roommate was home and everyone else was home but everyone got out ok. So, right?"

Ben: "The movie’s basically about three couples that decide they’re going to go to this little cabin in the woods and make porn."

Ben: "We shot the movie up in Squamish which is just south of Whistler. [We] found this gravel road out into the woods. It was really cool cause no cell phones worked. There was no-places were running on generators so we’d run out of gas and we’d have no power, we’d light some candles and hang out. It was nothing but people and a fire."

Ben: standing in the rubble, pointing "My bedroom’s over here somewhere, this is the couch. I guess I’m learning a lot about attachment to possessions because you think they’re much more important then they are. Then they go and you kinda go ‘Oh, ok I don’t really need that so much.’ picks up a board from the rubble [My] snowboard!" tosses it backdown
